I like pigeon photography, pigeons are very urban, there are plenty of those to choose from and they are relatively big birds so they are easy to shoot with my moderate 200mm tele lens.

This one is from Kallio, near Torkkelinmäki.

BTW: why do these birds stand on one foot?

Vaasanaukio

IMG_1782.JPG, originally uploaded by anttia.

Many humans consider the Vaasanaukio in Kurvi the most dangerous place in Helsinki. Still there is allways birds in there.

Photogaphers should remember thought, that the Vaasanaukio natives, alcoholics and drug addicts, do not like their pictures taken, and if they are in a paranoid mood they will be very sure that you are there to take pictures of them.

Cemetary birds

IMG_1677.JPG, originally uploaded by anttia.

One of the few quiet places in cities are the cemetaries. Many birds seem to like it. This is from Hietaniemi cemetary, a good place to spot a little less urban birds.

Töölönlahti

IMG_1648.JPG, originally uploaded by anttia.

One very popular birdphotography site is Töölönlahti. It is kind of a least urban area in the heart of Helsinki. There is allways birds, especially near the operahouse, where there is some kind of a sewer.

There is allways birds, and often birdphotographers.

These are some sort of ducks I suppose.

Asematunneli

IMG_1466.JPG, originally uploaded by anttia.

Propably the most urban birdwatching site in Helsinki is the Asematunneli. It is warm and dry throught the year, shops are open till 22.00 if you get thirsty or something, and the birds are quite used to people.

On the minus side, there is not very much diversity in asematunneli, it is not very likely to spot any very rare bird there.

I must olso mention, that it is olso kind of forbidden to take photographs there, so you might get in trouble with the security guards.

This place allways reminds me of the movie "Birds". There is allways a large crowd of pigeons and such, and the place is all concrete and asphalt, so I do not know why they like it so much.
